The Weekly Word

The Greatness of God

“Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom”

(Psalm 145:3).

Panasonic TC P42G25 - 42" plasma TV

We live in a BIG SCREEN world! Images no   larger than a postage stamp are projected onto giant screens to make everything seem bigger than life! In this material world where we place so much emphasis on size, most everyone stuck with a little screen longs for a bigger picture. That’s not what we really need. Those who have one don’t have much to show for it other than more dust and higher energy bills.

Our greatest need is not a bigger television, but a bigger picture of God. J.B. Phillips wrote a powerful little book in the early 1960’s entitled, “Your God Is Too Small.” He said, “The trouble with many of us today is that we have not found a God big enough for our modern needs.” But the Holy Bible presents to every reader an incomparably great God. The Psalmist calls God “the great King over all the earth” (47:2) “whose love is so great that it reaches to the heavens and whose faithfulness is so great that it reaches to the skies” (57:10). God’s purposes, power, strength, and character are immeasurably great.

God came to earth in His Son Jesus Christ that all might see and more fully experience the greatness of His love and power. He wants us to see Him. He wants us to experience Him. David says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8). He wants us to live a spiritually bigger life. As we read His Word with hungry hearts, as we pray for greater spiritual understanding, and as we worship and adore Him, our little screens will grow until one day in the near future “we shall know [Him] fully, even as we are fully known [by Him]” (1 Corinthians 13:12).

It’s heart-breaking to think that anyone would settle spiritually for a small screen when a bigger picture of God is available, one that projects a God big enough for every day and age.

Prayer: “Help me to see you more clearly, to love you more dearly, and to follow you more nearly.”

To a Great God worthy of All Praise,

Pastor Chris

Thank you for all the beautiful shoes donated to the Shoes for Orphan Souls drive!  You brought 43 pairs of shoes and 179 pairs of socks to church on Sunday.  What a wonderful sight - and just think, many of these new shoes and socks will be on the feet of orphans around the world and in the U.S.  within the next few weeks!   The same children that received a pair last year will again get a new pair this year through volunteers extending the love of Christ.  The drive is over Tuesday, August 31st, so there is still time to bring shoes this Sunday if you missed out last week.   Thank you again for your generosity and support and thanks to Brady Carter for the time he took to call families as a reminder!

Wednesday Night Small Group and Dinner

Beginning Wednesday, September 8 we will be having catered dinner and small group opportunities each Wednesday evening for the whole family.  Dinner will be $5 for adults/youth and $3 for children 11 and under with a $20 family maximum. Start planning now to spend your Wednesday nights with your church family.  What better place to feed your body and your soul.

This week you will have the opportunity to place your family on a "permanent reservation list" so that you will not have to sign up to eat dinner each week. If you will not be able to come on a particular week you will just need to cancel your reservation for that week.  If you prefer not to be on the permanent list you may make respervations each Sunday.  We do ask that if you have reservations and are not able to eat that you pay for the meal as the church will be responsibiile to pay for the number of reservations made.

Congregational Meeting

Our next Congregational Meeting will be held on Sunday, August 29 at 9:30 am. (during Acts 2:42).  Please make plans now to be in attendance at this meeting.

Upcoming Acts 2:42

Starting Sunday, September 12, Bob Sennett will lead a five-week series in Acts 2:42 based on what the Bible shows us about prayer. Bring your Bibles and be ready for us to share lots of good passages and
