The Weekly Word

As The World Turns

“Therefore we will not fear
though the earth gives way...”
Psalm 46:2a

As the World TurnsJohn, the morning gym supervisor expressed his relief to be home after feeling earthquake tremors during his visit to San Diego last week. He said, “It sure made me think!”

I thought to myself, “Think about what?” Well, maybe how what we know in one minute can change the next – in the blink an eye or faster; or maybe how insecure we sometimes feel in the midst of uncertainty, change, or transition; how scared we can be in an ever changing, turning world. In a world that is always turning, turning, turning, what must we do?

Trust God. T.S. Eliot once wrote about God being “the still point in the turning world.” No matter what changes, even if the landscape changes and the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the sea, we remember that we are held in the arms of God who is not moved by outward circumstances. Imagine the Lord standing tall and mighty as the world we may know comes crashing down around us. He who is not moved holds us in His arms – “He is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (46:1).

There is no way to know all the tremors or turns ahead. We can know that God is our dependable, trustworthy, loving anchor who always holds us. With that in mind, let’s plunge into life with great faith!

For Less Fear and More Faith,

Pastor Chris
