The Weekly Word

BREAKING THE ICE

“…whereby the sunrise shall visit us from
on high to give light…”
- Luke 1:78-79

Breaking the IceThe winter storm covered the landscape with more ice than I can ever remember. Chilly icicles hung on cars, gutters, and street drains. The trees all wore what looked like frosted wigs. The ice was so thick and hard that the boys and I gave up on making a snowman and built an ice fort! I also noticed that my weight failed to break the pond of ice beneath my feet until…

…the sun came out. Although temperatures were still below freezing, after just a few hours of sunshine, I could see and hear ice softening into slush and gigantic icebergs sliding off rooftops with loud thuds and vanishing like vapors on the ground below. While taking shuffle steps across the top of our driveway, I heard a snap, crackle, and pop noise that ran all the way to the street. The ice ripped down the middle. The sun was demonstrating its melting power to work beneath the surface to bring change.

icy treeAn icy landscape can depict the spiritual condition of individual souls and the corporate soul of the Church – hard, cold, set in our ways and unbreakable apart from the Son (Matthew 24:12, Hebrews 4:7). Zechariah called the prophesied Messiah “the sunrise.” The presence and power of the Son brings heat and light to transform the unbreakable.

Jesus is an ice breaker! When we are imprisoned within our self-made ice forts or become victims to the storms of life – rigid, stiff, stuck, and cold, let’s position ourselves under the Son and stay there until our hearts melt. His presence changes us!

Take fifteen minutes of your day to simply sit in His presence yearning for His warmth and light to shine on you. See Him melting the cold and inflexible places of your heart and shaping you for His pleasure and use.

Those who linger in His presence just might hear a snap, crackle, pop noise that runs from head to toe bringing new life to the soul.

Praying for Revival,

Pastor Chris
