THE SECRET PANTRY“I have food to eat that yo ~ John 4:32 ~ Jesus offers these words to his hungry disciples who were really just asking, “What’s for lunch?” As usual, Jesus is on a heavenly realm while his followers continued to be fixed on a more earthly one. He is always trying to help us see the unseen. Since childhood, my brothers and I have enjoyed visiting our grandmother. Her house seems like any other, but it’s no ordinary house if you know the secret. On almost every end table and coffee table throughout the house are ceramic and crystal bowls with lids. Inside each container is an assortment of treats – lots of chocolate, orange slices, gum drops, and whatever else Mamaw’s sweet tooth might be craving at the time. For years I’ve heard a Tupperware container in the corner of the kitchen filled with chocolate pinwheels calling out my name. Packs of juicy fruit chewing gum are lined up on top of the refrigerator. Every time we came home we could truthfully say to our Mom, “We have had food to eat that you know nothing about.” Mamaw had a secret pantry. Jesus says to each of us hungry disciples, “I’ve got a secret pantry, a great stash for you! It’s behind everything I do.” He said, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work” (4:34). Jesus’ ultimate source of nourishment was his secret, private and personal relationship with His Father. This motivated everything he did. It is this hidden food that will sustain us at all times just like it did Jesus – through the wilderness of temptation, through persecution, through rejection, through the fire and the flood and even those times when we face something as horrible as a cross. The Holy One has a stash for us, eternal food for our souls. Don’t wait another moment. Go right now to the Lord and ask Him to feed your hungry soul. Make your way to the secret pantry.
