LOVING ONE ANOTHER“Rejoice with those who rejoice, Really knowing someone is helpful to really loving someone. I am reminded of the story of the rabbi who was known for his devotion. One of his youthful disciples unexpectedly surprised him one day with a burst of feeling and the words, “My master, I love you!” The ancient teacher looked up from his books and asked his enthusiastic disciple, “Do you know what hurts me, my son?” The young man was deeply puzzled and began to stammer, “I don’t understand your question, Rabbi. I am trying to tell you how much you mean to me and you are confusing me with your irrelevant questions.” The rabbi humbly answered, “My question is neither confusing nor irrelevant, for if you do not know what hurts me, how can you truly love me?” Godly relationships are best forged in the crucible of spiritual conversations. Take time to know those you say you love. Ask them questions about their inner life. Get acquainted with what makes them sing and what makes them sigh. Feel the joy of their party and the squeeze of their pain. I want you to know that no matter how or how much you are hurt, God knows about it. May our Lord bless you with a friend who serves as a living reminder of God’s concern and care for you. Even better than having a friend like that is being a friend like that. Take time during this holy season to know others deeply. May God bless us with divine moments where we move past the surface into the substance. Only when people feel known can they truly feel loved.
