November 21-27, 2009
REAL LIFE“I came that they may have Our theme for 2009 is SIMPLE DEVOTION which calls us to eliminate many things from our lives, even some good things, in order to put the Lord first. It’s not God’s plan for believers to live panting and panicking lives. Thomas Kelly, that great Quaker, writes, “Even the necessary obligations which we feel we must meet grow overnight, like Jack’s beanstalk, and before we know it we are bowed down with burdens, strained, breathless, and hurried, panting through a never-ending program of appointments.” I confess that my soul isn’t always healthy enough to keep up with the speed of my life. Shouldn’t the health of our soul help to determine the speed of our lives? Pete Briscoe writes in Secrets from the Treadmill, “We must discipline ourselves to turn down the volume of our lives, slow down the pace of our lives, and remove some stuff in our lives that pads our walls but keeps us from hearing the solutions.” Jesus said that He came that we might have a full life, not a filled life. There is a huge difference. I notice that my capacity to love well is the first thing that goes when I have a packed life. What goes for you – perspective, thankfulness, kindness, joy, faith, friendship, or vision? I also notice that being too busy makes me blind to God at work. It is only when we stop our work that we see God’s. Lord, have mercy and help us stop long enough to see and feel again! Slowing and Growing for Real Life,
