STAYING CONNECTED“Abide in me…the branch cannot A few weeks ago I finally trimmed two trees in our front lawn. I have watched them grow from bald twigs into what looked like full wigs. Like sitting behind someone with too much hair, I could not see over or around them anymore. Using my hedge clippers, I felt the joy of a barber offering a much needed haircut. I neatly bagged the leafy limbs and sat them on the curb for garbage pickup. The next day I noticed that the once vibrant, green leaves poking through the plastic bags had withered and turned a yellowish brown. The leaves were brittle and crunchy to the touch. Just one day disconnected from the source of life can bring death. Just one day severed from the trunk or vine spells trouble. That’s why Jesus says, “Abide or remain in me…” Don’t leave me for even a single moment. I am your life, your source, your sap, the one who saves and sustains you at all times. If we do not remain in Him we will wither and waste away. Contrast wasting away with prospering. The Psalmist says that the person who meditates on the Lord’s Word “is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither” (Psalm 1:2-3). God desires for us to prosper, to flourish. Just one day forgetting Him and His Word can cause a slow fade. A day can turn into two and two can turn into four and four into eight. And we have become disconnected from our source of power and true prosperity. Sometimes in the summer we take a vacation from God rather than with God. As we move closer to fall, let’s reconnect – bond, unite, relate, join, and attach ourselves to Christ as if our lives depend upon it. What color will you be – yellowish brown or vibrant green? Fixed on Him,
