WALKING TOGETHERI received a phone call one day from Mike, a dear friend from Mississippi. Mike was normally a strong and confident, middle aged man with lots of business success. He also had a wonderful sense of humor and kept everybody in stitches from laughing so hard. But the afternoon I got the call, Mike’s tone was different. He didn’t waste much time telling jokes or passing pleasantries. He simply said, “Brother Chris, would you pray for Old Blue.” I had been out to Mike’s house enough to know that he was talking about one of his closest friends, his blue tick hound dog. He explained that he was on his way with Blue to the vet’s office and didn’t know if his good buddy would make it. And then he said something simple I will never forget. In a shaky voice he said, “Old Blue and I have taken a lot of tracks together.” There is no substitute for walking together. Nothing brings us closer to one another than step by step. Over the hills and through the valleys; through the frigid cold and flaming heat; being faithful through every uncertain and changing season creates a love bond that is unbreakable. Don’t walk out, walk with. Part of our journey as The Orchard is learning to walk with each other through the seasons, seasons of peace and disruption, of agreement and disagreement, of joy and sorrow, of momentum and boredom, of health and sickness. We are a spiritual family. There are times when walking together will make us feel like we are coming apart when we are actually growing closer together. Our steps together no matter how awkward or hard will be a testimony to the world of a love it knows not. It will be a trumpet blast to a generation which walks out on one another if everything is not settled in thirty minutes. For More Tracks Together,
